The Magical Žitný ostrov
In the heart of Central Europe lies Žitný ostrov, a land of rivers, legends, and endless fields. Bordered by the Danube, Little Danube, and Váh, it is Europe’s largest river island—84 km long and 1,885 km² in size—known as Slovakia’s breadbasket for its fertile soil and golden fields. Beneath its surface lies a vast freshwater reservoir, making it an ecological treasure protected as a National Nature Reserve.
Over the centuries, poets, kings, and travelers have admired this “Island of Fairies.” With over 2,000 hours of sunshine yearly, Žitný ostrov invites visitors to cycle riverside paths, relax in thermal spas, and explore its wetlands and villages.
